Logging has legacy effects on the structure of soil fungal communities several decades after cessation in Western Cascade forest stands

چکیده
Introduction Logging impacts millions of hectares forests globally every year, and not only affects tree cover, but also disrupts below-ground soil communities that are essential for forest ecosystems. Soil fungi particularly vulnerable to such disturbances due their reliance upon plant hosts as source carbon. Fluctuations within the major guilds important function can have ramifications biogeochemical processes. We addressed questions about fungal in temperate stands with varying logging histories: (1) Do assembly patterns functional reflect historical differences legacies? (2) Does sequencing resemble composition surveys fruiting bodies? (3) How do litter layer differ from those these change history? Methods Our study took place H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest western Oregon, USA. sampled (Oi—Oe) three sites different one clear cut 1974, selectively logged thinned times between 1974 2001, unlogged. sequenced separately mineral samples samples. Additionally, we compiled fruiting-body studies 1972 through present compare our eDNA Results found four decades after had ceased there were detectable signatures distinguished unlogged sites, indicating a legacy many generations (PERMANOVA; p < 0.001 both fungi). There significant 0.001) higher relative abundances pathogens greater proportion mycorrhizal soil. Discussion These results highlight importance including studies, entire be underestimated when considering single fraction. Together, repercussions regeneration following logging, functions fully recover even cessation.

Drought Legacy Effects on the Composition of Soil Fungal and Prokaryote Communities
It is increasingly acknowledged that climate change is influencing terrestrial ecosystems by increased drought and rainfall intensities. Soil microbes are key drivers of many processes in terrestrial systems and rely on water in soil pores to fulfill their life cycles and functions. However, little is known on how drought and rainfall fluctuations, which affect the composition and structure of ...
متن کاملon translation of politeness strategies in dialogues involving female characters in translations and retranslations of novels translated before and after the islamic revolution of iran and their effects on the image of women: a polysystem theory approach
abstract reception environment has considerable effects on accepting a translation. as the expectations of a target culture and its values and needs change throughout history, its criteria for accepting a translation or rejecting it will change accordingly (gentzler, 2001). the expectations of iran, as the reception environment in the present study, have changed after the islamic revolution. i...
The Impact of Selective-Logging and Forest Clearance for Oil Palm on Fungal Communities in Borneo
Tropical forests are being rapidly altered by logging, and cleared for agriculture. Understanding the effects of these land use changes on soil fungi, which play vital roles in the soil ecosystem functioning and services, is a major conservation frontier. Using 454-pyrosequencing of the ITS1 region of extracted soil DNA, we compared communities of soil fungi between unlogged, once-logged, and t...
